Statistical Overview - Australia - Nordea Trade Portal

‘For thousands of years, the original inhabitants of Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people occupied the lands with very different boundaries than today, centred on intimate cultural relationships with the land and sea. Aboriginal people saw their way of life as already ordained by the creative acts of the Dreaming beings and the blueprint that was their legacy, so their mission was simply to live in agreement with the terms of that legacy. There was thus no notion of progress and no room for competing dogmas or rebellion against the status quo. Indigenous Australians are descended from the people who lived in Australia and the surrounding islands prior to European colonisation. The Aboriginal people are the earliest surviving culture in the history of humankind, having set sustainable ways to manage their society and culture that ensured good health. They have inhabited Australia for no less than 60,000 years. Aboriginal peoples are one of two Indigenous cultural groups in Australia.

Aboriginal people from the coast describe themselves as “saltwater people”, those from river areas are “freshwater people”, and those from central arid regions are “desert people”. While Aboriginal people deal with the consequences of colonial Australian history, non-Aboriginal people have to deal with the causes of this history. They condemn feelings of guilt and shame to the dungeons of their minds and exclude a deeper discussion from textbooks and public debate.
